With the influx of backyard poultry keeping, many hobbyists are learning about their state's NPIP program.
NPIP, or National Poultry Improvement Plan, is a USDA sponsored and mandated program to help prevent the spread of infectious and dangerous diseases in poultry farms.

If you're familiar with the NPIP program, each state has varying requirements to participate- and many, if not all, require a government official to inspect your property and animals before you can enroll in the program.  Much fuss has been made in recent history about Pullorum and Avian Influenza during the US outbreak in 2024 and 2025 and some resistance to NPIP participation has been seen due to the widespread culling of animals suspected to have been exposed to these diseases.

With that said, we believe your decision to either participate in  NPIP or not is entirely your decision, but your commitment to knowing what may or may not be present on your farm is an expectation.  Preventative maintenance such as good biosecurity practice and regular disease testing is extremely important to the health of your flocks.

Our pullorum antigen testing is identical to the process used for the NPIP program, except the samples are collected by you and shipped to us for testing.  This service is not government provided, not reported to the government, and is only provided as a convenient and affordable on-demand first step to protecting your flock.

You may test ANY poultry and outdoor avian species can be tested including:

Chickens, turkeys, guinea fowl, peacocks, pheasants, ostriches, emu, ducks, geese, etc.

The benefits of using us to perform this test service for you:

1. No outsiders bringing in potential pathogens to your property and livestock.
2. Discreet- Handle potentially infected animals on your own*.
3. Cost effective
4. No wait. Results within 24 business hours of receipt of samples. No waiting for an available appointment with a field tester.
5. Reliable. Many field testers are volunteers and have limited time and access to materials. Antigen is often out of stock and unavailable.

Here's how it works:
1.Decide if you would like to have us ship you the kit, or if you'd like to do it all yourself**. A DIY kit will need to be printed from our fileshare.  You must be logged in to access the fileshare folder. Click HERE to be taken to that folder.
You must prepay for the testing before sending samples due to the demand for pullorum antigen. If we are not made aware to expect your samples, your testing might be delayed if there isn't enough antigen stocked in the lab at the time.  PLEASE let us know first!

2. Select the number of birds you would like to have tested.

3. Choose the speed of shipping. We recommend sending samples to us overnight. You may add on the fresh sample kit and overnight shipping service HERE. Please DO NOT SHIP on weekends. For the safest result, ship on Monday or Tuesday ONLY.

4. If you choose for us to send a collection kit- we will include all the necessary materials for you to collect and send us samples.

5. When your kit arrives, open the package carefully.  Locate the directions and follow them exactly.  You will be instructed to locate the ice packs, rehydrate them and then place them in the freezer first. They must be frozen for at least 48 hours prior to shipping.

6. When your kit is completed and packed properly, ship to us immediately. You will recieve a confirmation of receipt and condition of samples upon arrival.

7. If samples have arrived properly, testing will be completed within 24 business hours and results will be provided via email.  If there is an issue with your samples, you will also be notified immediately.

If you require samples of MORE THAN 200 birds to be tested, please send an email to sales@affordableavian.com for a custom invoice to be generated.

*Disease testing is for educational purposes only. Please read our disease testing FAQ  HERE and our disease testing disclaimer HERE.

Using our services for testing does NOT replace a field tester for the NPIP program. You may not use our testing for participation in NPIP.

** If samples arrive and are dried out, frozen, or warm due to inappropriate packaging or shipping, testing may not be able to be performed.  For this reason, we HIGHLY recommend you order our kit. Each kit will have the appropriate number of sample collection tools, full directions, ice pack(s), thermal mailers, and package insurance.
If you elect to send samples on your own, please adhere to the shipping directions provided.  If any steps are skipped, it could ruin your samples or prevent the shipper from delivering the package at all.
